“a Familiar From Our Country”: Emmanuel Macron Pays Tribute To Prince Philip

 

Since the announcement of Prince Philip’s death on Friday April 9, 2021, tributes have been pouring in to salute the prince consort’s career. For the second time, Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to his memory, recalling that the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, who died “peacefully” the day before, had been “familiar with our country”. Prince Philip was “familiar with our country having lived there in his youth and having come there often on the move, until 2014, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy,” said the head of the ‘State in a press release.

He added: “For many of our compatriots, he embodied British elegance and panache. French Croix de Guerre for his participation in World War II, Grand Cross of the National Order of the Legion of Honor, he knew the price paid by our two countries, allies and brothers in the fight for freedom. “Our armed forces were deeply grateful to him for his friendship and support,” continues the tenant of the Élysée Palace.

A troubled childhood between France, Germany and the United Kingdom

The Duke of Edinburgh, who died a few weeks before his hundredth birthday, had also spent several years in boarding school near Paris, during a troubled childhood and far from his parents between France, Germany and the United Kingdom. In a previous speech, Emmanuel Macron hailed the career of Prince Philip, who lived “an exemplary life defined by bravery, a sense of duty and commitment to young people”.
