The first stage of National High School Exam (Enem) takes place on November 13, two weeks after the second round of elections. In this phase, students will have to write the essay, whose themes usually address contemporary issues and social impact. The first test also covers 45 Languages questions and 45 Human Sciences questions.
Faced with a polarized election and with sensitive topics under discussion, students question the possibility of the dispute impacting the test in some way. THE CNN listened to professors, experts in essays, to clarify how and in what way the theme can be addressed in the content in the Enem.
Specialists say that the exam will hardly address the issue of elections directly. According to them, this never happened in other editions of the test. For the writing teacher of the Descomplica course, Isabel Sodré, however, the question is still “completely pertinent”.
“It’s not a scenario that students go through every year. It is interesting to look at the past and see how it was in the last electoral years. In 2018 the theme talked about ‘Manipulation of user behavior by controlling data on the internet’. In 2014, Enem talked about “Children’s advertising in question in Brazil”, said the teacher.
“We are noticing that in these atypical years, there has been a maintenance of this profile of working with themes of a social content, themes that analyze the relationship of the structures of society, the institutions of society and how this impacts the maintenance of rights”, he added.
Elections can inspire themes
According to the writing professor of the Descomplica Rafael Cunha course, the elections can inspire in the Enem test the approach of topics related to politics,
“You can talk about democracy, about hate speech on the networks, fake news, about the power of the vote; all these themes and paths can be suggested from the context of the elections”, says the professor.
“It has already inspired another theme that talked about the right to vote and the use of this weapon, in a good way, to guarantee the social transformations that Brazil needs. Elections can always inspire different themes”, concluded Cunha.
how to prepare
Specialists say that the best way to prepare for the Enem in an election year is to look for concepts related to the theme, which can be used in the construction of the text.
“What is the concept of democracy, what is the concept of republic, what is to act in a moral and ethical way in the context of elections, what is citizenship. All these concepts can directly and indirectly be used in a newsroom”, said Rafael Cunha.
Professor Isabel Sodré reiterates that, in the construction of arguments, candidates must be careful not to construct partisan texts that carry out political analyzes “in this very inflamed sense, because this hurts the concept of argumentation as a bias of a more theoretical, more scientific text in its genesis”.
political demonstration
Regardless of the topic to be addressed in the Enem newsroom, even if a few days away from the election that defines the next president and governors, it is important to emphasize that political manifestations should not be used in the tests, according to the experts.
“An election year brings many feelings to the surface and this asks those who are preparing for these tests to redouble their attention. Not to build in any way, regardless of whether it is an election year or not, a partisan discourse”, said Isabela Sodré.
The teacher also suggests that partisanship be avoided, and brings two suggestions for students who are going to take the test.
“First: not to mention politicians or parties, that is not the way of Enem. Second: always work with universal rights and issues, such as human rights, the rights of the individual and citizen, fundamental rights and guarantees such as those that are in article 5 of the federal Constitution,” he said.
“All this will always be a good approach, without necessarily leaning to one side or the other on the ideological side,” he added.
The second test of the Enem will be on November 20, with 45 Mathematics questions and 45 Natural Science questions.
