In Yekaterinburg, a trial began on five participants in the gang, which stole a crypto investor for the sake of ransom in cryptocurrency.

According to the investigation, in July 2023, in the village of Rudny, an armed group, including a former policeman, abducted a cryptoinvestor, demanding access to his cryptocurrency wallets. The attackers hoped that assets were stored on wallets worth more than 500 million rubles.

The gang held its victim in the Lower Isetsky Forest, until it forced threats to inform the login and password from one of the cryptocurrencies. Then the criminals took 5.6 million rubles to their accounts in USDT stabelcoins, the case file says.

The kidnappers counted on anonymity and difficulty tracking transactions with digital assets. The security forces were able to track the transfer of funds when unknown people tried to cash out 4 million rubles through a “third -party buyer of crypto assets”. The suspects were detained by the police in August 2023.

Earlier, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Belarus announced the verdict of a resident of Grodno for the robbery and an attempt to extort bitcoins. According to investigators, two criminals, introducing themselves as electricians, entered the apartment of a resident of Minsk and for several hours tortured a victim, threatening a pneumatic gun. The court sentenced the only detainee to 13 years in prison.
