“The Greek economy is doing very well,” the Minister of Development and Investments Adonis Georgiadis said this morning on ERT, focusing on tourism, exports and investments.
He emphasized that “as long as our economy is doing well, we share the excess of the budget goals” while he noted that he is not sure that the elections will be held at the end of the four years due to the polarization of the electoral climate.
“I cannot understand why the economy should be a factor of concern. That there will be difficulty in the winter, there will be. This will be because of President Putin and the possible interruption of Russian natural gas,” said the minister, referring to the way of dealing with the inflationary crisis noted that the government took a number of support measures for citizens, which, as he underlined, are not enough but “there is no way to escape from a global inflation”.
Referring to the foreign exchange that tourists leave in our country, the minister said that “the tourism of 2022 will be higher in revenue than 2019” while he added that the same is happening with investments as, as he said: “in 2021 we had record investments of the last 28 years. This year we are going for over 40 billion euros in exports”.
He added: “We have very high inflation, well above the European average. This is due to the large deflation of the previous year and the fact that we have a higher growth rate than the rest of the European countries and this drags inflation down a lot.”
Regarding energy costs and how it will mitigate the impact on society, Mr. Georgiadis stated that “as long as we have growth we will be able to help the world financially”. The minister added that “if our money was enough for everyone we would give”.
On Fuel Pass he said the government had widened the income criteria in Fuel Pass 2 to make it fairer. “We distribute our own money, not borrowed money, as long as our economy is doing well we distribute the excess of the budget targets. Speaking about the Greek debt, he emphasized that it does not inspire concern in anyone as long as the reforms continue and we have stability.”
The economy does not like political instability
“I believe that when the time comes for elections, the Greek people will choose stability and everything will be fine,” said Mr. Georgiadis, pointing out that “the economy does not like political instability.” He added that “anyone who wants the country not to enter into an adventure will want us to have a stable government”.
Asked about when elections will be held, the minister stated that this is not his responsibility.
“A long pre-election period, with extremely high intensity and toxicity, will damage the economy. As long as the opposition increases its tone while we are approaching the elections anyway, this will burden the economy as well”, said the minister and in response to whether the government will use up the four-year term he said he does not know if this is possible.
Regarding the possibility of post-election cooperation, he emphasized that he never rules it out, but he does not see any party wanting to cooperate. “You cannot form a government with a party with which you fundamentally disagree,” he added.
Novartis case
Commenting on the judges’ decision on the Novartis case, Mr. Georgiadis denied the reports that he apologized. On the contrary, sticking to his original point of view, he criticized the Judges saying characteristically: “In the Republic everyone is judged, including the judges, for what they write and everyone decides how they want to end their career in shame or honor”.
Finally, for the attack with gas canisters on the house of ND MP Babis Papadimitriou, Mr. Georgiadis condemned it saying that “when they put gas canisters on your house it is an act of terrorism”.
