Iran today called on “all parties to the conflict” in Yemen to form a government of national unity to end the war that has plagued the country for seven years.
“We believe that a government should be formed in which all parties will participate in order to preserve the national unity and sovereignty of Yemen,” Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian was quoted as saying by IRNA.
Yemen, an impoverished country in the Arabian Peninsula, is torn apart by one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world due to the war that began in 2014, the occupation of the capital by Houthi rebels and the intervention a year later by the international military coalition leadership of Saudi Arabia, which supports the government of the country.
The crisis in Yemen “can only be resolved politically,” Amir-Abdollahian insisted, speaking in Tehran at a ceremony in memory of Hassan Eirlu, Iran’s former ambassador to Sanaa, who died last week from Covid-19. .
Saudi Arabia has long accused Iran of equipping the Houthis with ballistic missiles and drones, which are used to hit targets in the kingdom. Tehran admits that it supports the guerrillas politically, but not that it provides them with weapons.
According to the UN, the war in Yemen has claimed the lives of 377,000 people. The 227,000 deaths are attributed to the indirect consequences of the conflict, such as lack of drinking water and disease.
