A. Guterres: ‘Time to end Russia’s absurd war in Ukraine’

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today called for an end to the “irrational war” that began with the Russian invasion of Ukraine a month ago, warning that the conflict was “going nowhere” and that the Ukrainian people were “enduring a living hell”.

“Continuing the war in Ukraine is morally unacceptable, without political basis and militarily absurd,” Guterres told reporters in New York.

Russian forces are pounding Mariupol until it turns into “ashes of a dead land”, the city council announced today, citing two more huge bombs that fell on the city, which remains under siege and blockade for two weeks.

“Even if Mariupol falls, Ukraine cannot be conquered city-by-city, street-by-street, house-by-house,” Guterres said. “There can be no winner in this war. Sooner or later, he will have to cross the battlefield to the table of peace.”

“It’s time to end this absurd war,” he said.

Russia launched what it calls a “special military operation” on February 24 to destroy Ukraine’s military infrastructure. Kyiv and its Western allies accuse Moscow of indiscriminately attacking civilians. Moscow denies it.

Guterres said about 10 million Ukrainians had fled their homes and warned that the effects of the war were being felt worldwide “with rising food, energy and fertilizer prices threatening to escalate into a global hunger crisis”.

“There is enough on the table to stop the hostilities – now … and to negotiate seriously – now,” he added.
