A happy ending to a Texas synagogue hostage-taking

All the people who were held hostage in a Jewish synagogue in Coleville, Texas, were released and are in good health, said the governor of the state, Greg Abbott.

“The prayers were answered. “All the hostages are alive and well,” Abbott wrote in a Twitter post after a thriller that lasted more than ten hours.

The chronicle of the case

Authorities negotiated for hours with a man who had taken hostages at a synagogue in Coleville, Texas, during Saturday’s live broadcast, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Coleville police posted a message on Twitter earlier today stating that they were conducting SWAT operations (with special weapons and tactics, for extremely dangerous situations) on the building block of the Beth Israel Synagogue, and said that all residents in the immediate vicinity with the synagogue they were removed from their homes.

No injuries were reported inside the building, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Coleville Police Officer Dara Nelson said negotiators “have contacted someone inside the synagogue who they suspect,” the Dallas Morning News reported.

The man was heard having a one-on-one conversation, in what appeared to be a phone call during the live broadcast of the Sabbath service at the Jewish synagogue. Live streaming was stopped at around 3 p.m. Eastern time (22.00 Greek time).

The Beth Israel Synagogue was founded in 1999.

Coleville is a suburb of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
