A hero by Asghar Farhadi: “My homage to the golden years of Italian cinema”

A scene from A hero at Ashgar Farhadi.

With his film Farhadi pays homage to «the Italian cinema of the golden age, one above all Vittorio De Sica and his bike thieves», The Iranian director confesses,« I also love films by Fellini, Pasolini, Ettore Scola, Visconti and brothers Taviani. I believe that your cinema is the greatest ».

Despite creating and destroying heroes Farhadi don’t think i social networks are completely negative. “They also have positive aspects, such as giving a voice to those who did not have the opportunity before their advent”, he explains, “it is true, social networks can give life to equivocal situations, but they also have a positive aspect”.

It is precisely on social media that Farhadi wanted to respond with an open letter to those who accuse him of being pro-government and also threatened to withdraw his film from the race for Oscar. «There is a radical part that claims that I am part of the system», he says, «I distanced myself by saying that I am simply a director. Whether to send A hero at the Oscars it means being accused of this, so I withdraw it, and to anyone who presents my film for the statuette I say: if you have to do it to make me weigh it then you are free not to present it, also because I owe you nothing ».
