A huge car in which everyone is comfortable (surprisingly). Test drive Nissan Pathfinder 2021

Japanese large crossover, assembled in the USA, built on the basis of Nissan-Renault? It’s all about him, Pathfinder 5th generation!

Let’s immediately put aside the statements “Pathfinder is not the same.” Otherwise, you can scold any modern car that has admirers and a pedigree. So read on, consider, this is the 2021 Nissan Pathfinder.

Acquaintance and interior

Good from the stern, even in gray

You know, I’m a little fan of gray. Apparently, I got tired of him in Moscow, they paint a lot of them here: doors, walls, fences. Therefore, when I learned that the new Pathfinder for the test I will get gray, I raised an upset eyebrow. But then I saw him live and I can say that this color suits him!

By the way, about the face … it didn’t go in, it gives off some kind of facelessness of the modern car industry, there is not enough charisma. But from the stern, the opposite is true. In general, everything that is further than the front pillar, I really like it very much. Especially the butt. With this huge “PATHFINDER” lettering and a new logo. The latter, by the way, looks like it should glow. But no, he doesn’t.

Of the practical aspects – a plastic matte skirt, although not so big. Of the impractical — the black color of the upper part of the car. Stylish, but very hot in summer. However, there are also one-color body options.

I will again begin to acquaint you with the interior from the stern, but first I note that the car has three rows of seats and in this Top Comfort configuration the second row is two separate chairs, but there is a sofa in the back. Behind the sofa is a place for several backpacks, no more. So if you are traveling with a large company with things, you can’t do without a roof rack. But if for a couple of days, there is enough space, checked. The luggage compartment has its own cigarette lighter socket, a light bulb (lo and behold) on the top door. In the underground there is a place for any small things, there is also a jack and all sorts of necessities for unpleasant situations on the road. Dokatka under the bottom. By the way, access to the hold by a wave of the leg under the bumper.

I will switch to an important point for such a large car, given the presence of the third row – transformation! So: the third row is folded with a lever on the back in a ratio of 40 to 60. With the same lever, you can adjust the back. To return the sofa, you need to pull on the cable on the back of it. To get to the third row (and get out of it), the second row seats have special buttons (two per seat, they duplicate for boarding and disembarking), which automatically tilt the second row seats forward. The button, by the way, is backlit, but it does not work while driving. Thoughtfully! After embarkation/disembarkation, the second row seat returns to its original position manually and each time to the farthest position, so you have to adjust again, this can be frustrating for second row passengers.

The third row is generally comfortable if you are not very tall. A three-zone climate finishes there (controlled either from the front or from the second row), there are cup holders in the armrests and one USB charger. When communicating from the third row, you will have to raise your voice a little, because the first row is far away, and you can hear the noise from the wheel arches.

The second row in contrast is just a business class on an airplane. Two separate seats, backrest adjustment, armrests, climate control and heated seats and cup holders both in the center and in the door cards. If you move the seats as far back as possible, then there is a lot of space. The only thing missing is the airflow of these chairs. But consider the nitpick relevant only to the older configuration. By the way, the second row also has a flat floor, despite the all-wheel drive Pathfinder.

Compared to the luxury of the second row, the passenger seat in front feels more “faded”. Well, you sit in front, and at the same time there is no height adjustment below the second row. But there is a seat airflow and its own climate. And a convenient niche in the dashboard.

Well, about the “captain’s” place. There are all sorts of adjustments. The memory of the chair (as well as the steering wheel and side mirrors) is available for two persons. There are many places around where you can place your good. There is a large niche in the armrest … the cup holders are large, you can even put liter glasses with soda. Wireless charging and slot for smartphone. Two USB (Type-A and Type-C) and a cigarette lighter socket in place. A one and a half liter bottle freely fits into the front door cards and there is still room. Let’s quibble a bit: the groove for the smartphone is not very deep and it flies out of there even during overclocking. And in the top configuration with such equipment, it would be possible to make the central box with cooling.

The gearshift lever is plump here, but does not stick out in the middle of the cabin. It takes a little getting used to, but it’s comfortable. Climate. Praise the gods – push-button! Zero reasons to climb into the menu for climate settings or airflow / heating seats.

So, time to scold! Why so much gloss? The entire climate control panel and all the buttons around the display are glossy. And also an overlay on the steering wheel and armrests of the doors in front. That’s all I wanted to say.

About multimedia. Surprisingly, not such a large display by today’s standards. The graphics are also not very modern. It wouldn’t hurt to redraw it. I am glad that there are physical menu selection buttons, the volume is also on the knob. It is convenient to use, but the multimedia system itself does not work super fast. In the presence of regular navigation (I don’t see the point in it) and support for Android Auto and Car Play.

By tradition, Nissan has settings directly for the car in the tidy menu, everything else in multimedia. And I was missing the sound settings, given that there are Bose speakers here, and they are clearly capable of more.

The instrumentation is fully digital. There are two themes, one of them strongly resembles Chinese cars. There are plenty of settings, output information – too. To some, it may seem like too much. But, if you don’t want all this, you can leave a blank screen and classic devices.

Here it would be possible to proceed to the conclusion, but there is a projection display available. I caught myself thinking, in the presence of a projection, that in general, you can already refuse to tidy. Speed, cruise control indications and some other necessary information are there, no one wants to look at the speed today. And you can see all the information well both in bright light and at night.

And here is the result of the cabin. First, it is pleasant externally. Yes, some materials and the dominance of plastic and gloss can be disappointing, but the pleasant Nappa leather of the light interior makes it very status (there is also a brown version). You can feel it especially in the second row. In black, the interior gives a completely different feeling, so choose. Secondly, it is comfortable and there is a lot of space for every little thing, again, everything is thought out and you don’t feel deprived. And in general, the transformation of the cabin pleases and is ready to adapt to your needs.

Let’s hit the road

Sports manners and not the highest ground clearance

V6 and 275 horses are very suitable for this car. It even has some sportswear. Yes, sport mode and paddle shifters are available. Pathfinder picks up speed briskly (for such a machine, of course), and you don’t feel left out at all either in the city or on the highway. By the way, this is true for a large load of the cabin. I was traveling with six people on board, and there was no particularly strong difference with a single trip.

But here’s the paradox, as for me, Pathfinder is more suited to the eco-mode of operation. The constant desire to twitch a little at the start disappears in him, he becomes calm and docile. And it was in this mode that I felt more comfortable and relaxed.

Perhaps a very soft suspension also played a role here, which likes to rock the car a little and allows the car to roll in corners (at this moment, insufficient lateral support for the second row seats still pops up). But, various obstacles are passed smoothly and imposingly.

In general, impressiveness is what I wanted from this car in the end, and he gave it to me, which pleased me. It seems to me that Pathfinder is not about dynamics for sure, although he can, to the best of his ability.

It is comfortable in the city, you just need to get used to parking a five-meter car. This will help four cameras around the perimeter, as well as front and rear parking sensors. There is also an automatic parking system.

An interesting point is also with the rear-view mirror (it is dimmed, by the way). But if you pull the lever, it will switch to streaming video from the rear camera. This camera is separate and has the ability to adjust both in height and in the rotation of the lens. I won’t say that this is a super-necessary device, but it saves in the dark.

In general, the key thing that a car provides is comfort. That with a short trip for shopping in a supermarket, that with a long trip with a large company. Good equipment allows everyone not to lose charge in devices, transformation and ease of landing provide the comfort of a long stay in the car. Well, a perfectly working adaptive cruise control with active steering (turned on and off independently of each other) allows you to safely get to the desired point. And then you understand, here it is the quintessence of a modern car – it seems that you manage everything, but at the same time you don’t strain too much and, as a result, you don’t really get tired.

Yes, this car is not so much about driving (surprisingly, the penultimate Qashqai steered more fervently), it is about a comfortable way to get where you need to go without a heavy load on all participants in the process. The only thing that can get in the way is 194 mm of ground clearance. So, given the dimensions, it is better to forget about hard-to-reach places. But four-wheel drive and various modes that change the behavior of a car under various conditions work with dignity. The scenario with a country road with pits after the rain worked out perfectly. What more could you want?

Review

I would live in it

Indeed, this is exactly what I thought at the end of the test drive. Yes, perhaps this is not the most interesting car in terms of any unusual things, everything here is modern, but ordinary. As if there is nothing to catch on at first. A pleasant view of the cabin, an abundance of pockets and coasters, space and comfort. All this seems imperceptible, but creates a feeling of confidence and calmness on the way. And I didn’t want to leave the car. Is this almost the main value of the car?

Add to this a host of driver assistants to reduce the possibility of dangerous situations almost to a minimum.

Oh yes, there is also a panoramic sunroof!

Pros:

  • the comfort of all on board;
  • the possibility of transforming the interior;
  • space;
  • excellent equipment with both sockets and driver assistants;
  • an abundance of niches and coasters.

Minuses:

  • inappropriate gloss.

May not like:

  • ground clearance of 194 mm.

Admire a few more photos, was it in vain that I photographed at dawn!
