A huge piece of glacier in the Swiss Alps detached this afternoon, with ice and rocks falling into a mountain village, which had been evacuated earlier this month due to the impending landslide risk. “An incredible amount of material fell into the valley,” said Matthias Emperner, a spokesman for the local authorities, noting that he does not know so far if there are victims. The buildings and infrastructure of the village Blaten were hit by the landslide. Due to the danger, the Swiss authorities were closely watching the hillsides above Blaven, a village of about 300 inhabitants in the Lekedal Valley, southern Switzerland. On May 19, they ordered the inhabitants to leave their homes. A video posted on social networking sites shows the dramatic moment, when the glacier collapses partially and a huge cloud covers a portion of the mountain, while rocks and debris slides on the slope and ending on the outskirts of the village.
