A journey through the Norwegian city that is the gateway to the Arctic

Full of fjords, mountains and lots of natural beauty, the Norway is a breathtaking land. Despite being cold, especially during the autumn and winter months, it manages to warm us through its culture, which is reflected in the food and the well-preserved history of the native peoples. The country is also one of the best places to see an almost magical phenomenon: the Northern Lights .

After the journey through the Mediterranean that began in the Algarve, in Portugal, and ended in Sicily, in Italy, I and the team at CNN Travel & Gastronomy we set off on a colder adventure, this time in Scandinavia . It was an eight-day trip between Norway and Denmark, during which we passed through fjords and charming little towns.

The starting point was Tromsø in Norway, nicknamed capital of the northern lights and also known as the gateway to the Arctic . But there is a difference: the entire route was made on water with the Silver Dawn a Silversea Cruises cruise ship that took to the seas in April 2022.

The modern vessel accommodates only 596 guests and offers comfort, fine dining and an unusual itinerary. There are eight dining options, from a Japanese restaurant to a high-end cocktail bar, and laundry, room service and a mini bar are also included. Find out all about the ship here.
