Iranian authorities have executed a man convicted of killing a police officer and injuring five others during the protests that erupted after the death of Mahsha Amini in 2022, the judiciary agency Mizan Online reported.
“The death sentence was carried out this morning on Mohammad Gobadlou after 487 days of legal proceedings,” the agency noted.
The events took place during the riots that erupted in September 2022 following the death of Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman three days after she was arrested by morality police for not wearing her headscarf properly.
Her death sparked protests against Iran's political and religious leaders, with the young woman becoming a symbol of the fight against the headscarf requirement. In the context of the violent repression of these mobilizations, hundreds of people were killed and thousands were arrested.
In February 2023, the Supreme Court of Iran suspended the execution of Mohammad Gubadlou and requested that his mental state be checked, as Mehr Agency pointed out. Finally today he allowed the execution to proceed.
Gobadlu is the eighth person to be executed after being convicted of killing or using violence against members of the security forces during the 2022 protests.
Iran is the country that executes the most people annually, often by hanging, after Chinaaccording to Amnesty International.
