A miner from the Irkutsk region owes power engineers 28 million rubles

The Bayandaevsky District Court of the Irkutsk Region ruled that a resident of the Ust-Ordynsky Buryat District must pay Irkutskenergosbyt 28.6 million rubles for electricity consumed.

The TASS agency reports that a resident of the Bayandai village organized a large-scale farm for mining cryptocurrencies on his site. The size of the farm was truly impressive – the devices on the site consumed 800,000 kWh per month, which is comparable to a small industrial enterprise. At the same time, he paid according to the tariffs for the population – 0.86 r per kWh, and did not let the power engineers who came for checks to the site.

However, representatives of Irkutskenergosbyt did not give up – they collected evidence and went to court. The court held an off-site meeting, during which only hay was found in the premises on the site – the owner removed the equipment in advance. However, racks with sockets convinced the court that cryptocurrencies were mined at the site.

“In court, it was proved that the resource is used not for domestic needs, but for commercial purposes. When using electricity for household needs in rural areas, the tariff is 0.86 kWh, the commercial tariff is 3.5 times higher. Thus, the defendant did not pay for electricity properly. According to the court decision, the defendant must pay 28.6 million rubles as a recalculation for electricity at a commercial tariff,” representatives of Irkutskenergosbyt say.

In February, power engineers in the Irkutsk region announced that the spread of mining among the inhabitants of the region led to an increase in energy consumption by 4 times.
