A minister of the Palestinian Authority accuses Israel of ill-treatment of prisoners in Gaza

Kandura Fares, the Palestinian Authority’s minister responsible for prisoner affairs, yesterday accused Israel of waging a “war of revenge” against Palestinian prisoners captured during the war in the Gaza Strip, citing the widespread use of torture since the 7 October. Asked by AFP about his statements, a spokesman for the Israeli armed forces countered that they “categorically reject the accusations of systematic ill-treatment of prisoners” who have been arrested in the Gaza Strip. “Israel is waging a war of revenge against those incarcerated within the walls of prisons and detention centers,” Mr Fares charged during a press conference in Ramallah, the seat of the Palestinian Authority, in the occupied West Bank. Mr. Fares, the head of the Ministry of Prisoners’ Affairs, denounced the “crimes committed against the prisoners”, which Israel is treating as “hostages”. The ministry’s legal adviser, Khaled Mahajna, has alleged that torture, including “rape” and “psychological violence,” is being committed, citing what detainees have said. […]
