A new chapter

This article is published in number 8 of Vanity Fair on newsstands until February 23, 2021

What’s the new in Italy? Who is writing the next rules of music, cinema, entertainment and more generally culture? Who really makes a difference today? We thought of this issue as a chorus of voices, experiences and projects of those who are changing cinema, music, fashion, entertainment, food, travel, sport, politics, even philosophy.

Don’t mistake it for the usual portrait of generation X (those born between 1965 and 1980) or Y (the Milliennials who arrived between 1980 and 2000) or Z (after 2000). In the next pages, in fact, you will not find yet another celebration of the latest social network, from TikTok to Clubhouse, with the related characters that characterize the medium, the message and the target audience.

What we have worked on is a partial but design catalog of a group of pioneers. Talents who have had the courage to break patterns to do new things or to re-establish patterns to recover old ones. Screenwriters, directors, composers, activists, athletes, writers, musicians and more generally creatives who have never given up, even in the face of the pandemic, in defining their dreams.

Each in its own way. Each with their own miseries and greatness, opportunities and limitations, availability of means or absence of everything necessary. Read their stories, their exploits, their falls and climbs. Do not dwell only on what they do but on how, on why and above all on where they want to bring Italy and more generally the world around them.

Ours is only a selection and like all choices it is not complete. One more time: it is a partial but design catalog that aims to trigger ideas, debate and action. Something that indicates directions, solutions and hopes for change at a time that seems to suggest quite the opposite.
