A new landscape is being formed in telecommunications in 2022

A series of important developments brought 2021 in the telecommunications market. After several years of stagnation, moves such as the agreement to acquire Wind and the entry of new players into the wholesale market create the conditions for a new landscape, while the development of new generation networks remains a great challenge, especially in the stable.

Just a few days ago, the European Commission gave the “green light” for the acquisition of Wind by the United Group. the second largest player in the fixed telephony market in Greece.

The new company that will be created will have about 1.3 million customers in fixed telephony, of which about 650 thousand correspond to Wind and will surpass Vodafone in number of subscribers. As Nova is not a mobile provider, the new company will remain in third place in the market, but the goal is to increase subscribers through combined offers.

Market participants, in fact, expect that there will be a period of offers and price reductions, as the new company will want to increase its subscription base and the other two companies will respond with their own offers.

In 2022 we can see the emergence of a new virtual mobile provider (Mobile Virtual Network Operator – MVNO), as the energy company Volton is very close to an agreement with Vodafone. Virtual providers are companies that do not have their own infrastructure or spectrum licenses, but instead “rent” the radio from mobile providers, usually MVNO companies targeting specific audiences and markets by offering special packages and offers.

OTE is increasing its investments

In the midst of these market developments, OTE, which holds the largest market share in both fixed and mobile telephony, announced that it will expand its investment program to bring fiber optic (FTTH) to 3 million homes and businesses. , increasing its investment plan to over 3 billion euros by 2027. Only from the group’s investments, almost 2/3 of the lines of Greece with fiber optics to the house will be covered.

However, in addition to the expansion of the Fiber To The Home network, OTE announced that it will upgrade, at no additional cost, the fixed internet speeds that Cosmote subscribers currently have in areas where fiber optics have not yet reached home, where this is technologically feasible.

PPC in telecommunications

In the new year, the plan to expand PPC in the telecommunications market will begin. The Board of Directors of PPC approved a few days ago the term sheet with the banks for the development project in the market. The Board also approved the launch of the first pilot program in Peristeri.

The next step will be to announce tenders for the installation of a fiber optic network throughout the company’s distribution network. It is noted that the aerial electricity distribution network of the company, where the installation of fiber optics is planned, reaches a length of 242 thousand kilometers. Based on the planning, PPC will build the fiber optic network, which will then lease to the telecommunications providers. According to the business plan presented by the company’s management, PPC expects revenues of 120 million euros from the opening in the telecommunications market.
