A new PPP project with an investment cost of 82 million euros was approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

A new PPP project with a total investment cost of 82 million euros was approved today by the Interministerial PPP Committee, chaired by the Deputy Minister of Development & Investments, Mr. Nikos Papathanasis.

It is about the project “Chochlakion Reservoir of Lasithi Prefecture and accompanying works – St. John Ierapetra Dam of Lasithi Prefecture and basic irrigation water utilization projects”.

The partnership concerns the study, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the irrigation infrastructure in the Prefecture of Lassithi in Crete with the aim of meeting irrigation needs and the development of agriculture and tourism in the area of the Prefecture of Lassithi.

The project includes the construction and operation of an earthen reservoir in the Chochlakia area of the Municipality of Sitia (with water supply and transport projects to the irrigated lands and road construction projects) and the construction and operation of the Agios Ioannis-Ierapetra dam and basic irrigation water utilization projects (supply and water distribution and irrigation network projects).

The regions of Lasithi Prefecture are vulnerable to underground agrochemical contamination due to the excessive use of underground water resources. The water needs of the Chochlakia region are currently covered by a network of springs, wells and boreholes, while in Agios Ioannis irrigation is provided by the existing inadequate irrigation networks.
