A new strong cyclone is threatening India

More than a million people have been forced to flee their homes in India as Hurricane Yas approaches, just days after another hit the country’s west coast.

Its meteorological service India Cyclone Yas is expected to hit the Bay of Bengal and is expected to hit the eastern states of Odisha and West Bengal, as well as neighboring Bangladesh, on Wednesday.

“It is likely to cause large-scale damage” said the head of the service Mrutunzai Mohapatra, as broadcast by AMPE.

Local authorities have begun transporting people by car and boat from coastal areas to shelters set up in government buildings, schools and other solid buildings. Pregnant women and children were sent to state hospitals and fishermen pulled their boats out of the sea.

Volunteers in the city of Balasore in the state of Odisha, where he is expected to strike cyclone, warn residents through loudspeakers to leave their homes.

“Evacuation is always a challenge. “In general, people are hesitant (…) this time we have covid-19,” said Visal Kumar Dev, the official in charge of overseeing the evacuation operation in Balasore.

“People often say ‘we will only leave when it rains’.” We do not convince them “ he added.

Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal are common at this time of year. Last week, Cyclone Tocate, the strongest to hit India’s west coast for more than two decades, killed more than 150 people.
