Yesterday, April 22, Epic Games employees officially announced the release of five non-game apps on their digital Epic Games Store. For example, the platform now allows the client to download the indie games store itch.io, the largest distribution platform for indie video games in the world. At the same time, you cannot download the indie games themselves in the Epic Games Store – a gamer can only download a client of another store, and there they already purchase content and download it to their PC. Also, gamers were able to download a secure browser with source code called Brave.
Additionally, the store has an application for listening to streaming radio iHeartRadio, a relatively simple KenShape program that allows you to model in 3D, as well as another drawing application with source code – Krita. However, this is not the first time that representatives of the main competitor Steam have added non-gaming content to their catalog – in December 2020, representatives of the platform allowed downloading the client of the music streaming service Spotify. True, since then only five new applications have been added to the catalog, the demand for most of which raises questions.
For example, the same Brave browser, radio or drawing application can be downloaded from the official sites – it will probably be even faster and more convenient. On the other hand, this step demonstrates to the audience that the Epic Games Store, like Steam, does not plan to be exclusively a video game store – in the foreseeable future, the platform will become a multimedia combine, where it will be possible to download various in-demand applications. It is for this purpose that a separate section has appeared in the store, where they will gradually add other content that has nothing to do with the world of video games.
