The 70-year-old pensioner from the Canadian province of the British Colombia lost about $ 160,000 as a result of a long-term scheme associated with false transfer of funds into cryptocurrency.

According to law enforcement agencies, Osushenside, fraudsters introduced themselves to their victim by employees of the local branch of the Royal Canadian horse police (RCMP) and reported to compromise its social insurance numbers, which is necessary for interacting with state programs, including the tax system, social payments and pension provisions.

Fraudsters convinced the pensioner that to preserve his savings and safe interaction with state institutions, he should use the services of cryptomats and transfer funds to the accounts indicated by them. The scheme lasted several years, during which the criminals gradually lured a large amount from the pensioner.

“The criminals act sophisticatedly, exploiting the vulnerabilities of the elderly, who often do not have sufficient knowledge of cryptocurrencies and supposedly trust the official sources of information,” the police said.

The police added that a year earlier, another local resident lost about $ 20,000 as a result of a fraudulent scheme with a fictitious “restoration of crypto assets”. Earlier, the RCMP department of Nanaimo reported that two local residents had lost $ 17,000 a total of a day due to fraud with bitcoins.
