In the fall of 2021, an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, investigators say, collected information on three residents of the republic who were suspected of selling drugs.
While interrogating the female suspect, the policeman learned that she had a crypto-wallet application on her smartphone with assets worth 1.8 million rubles. Threatening to prosecute the woman, the officer demanded that all funds be transferred to his own wallet. The frightened suspect complied with the demand.
The head of the department was detained, the investigation is going to seek arrest through the court. Searches were carried out at the place of duty and at the home of a high-status employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Subordinates were interrogated. The investigation is ongoing.
The number of criminal cases related to cryptocurrencies in Russia increased fivefold in 2023, said Dmitry Kirillov, a teacher at the educational platform Moscow Digital School.
