A portrait of the renaissance painter Titian, who had been missing for almost 20 years, was found, according to Italian police. The 16th century work entitled “Portrait of a man in a black beret” (Ritratto di gentiluomo con berretto nero) was first lost two decades ago from an unknown location. After his disappearance in 2004, authorities believed he had been transferred to Switzerland illegally.
It has now been discovered by part of the Turin’s cultural heritage unit of the Italian state police.
The Renaissance painter was active in the 16th century as a member of the Venetian school. He gained a reputation for rendering aristocratic and mythical themes in dramatic style and served as a court painter to Italian nobles and members of the Austrian Hapsburg dynasty before his death in 1576.
Police are investigating two Swiss citizens
The work was presented by the Italian state at an official ceremony on May 19 in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italywhere he was taken for rehabilitation and held at a local studio in Asti.
The police department did not release details about the original owner and the location where the painting was found. Its value is estimated at over seven million dollars.
In 2011, Sotheby’s sold Titian’s painting “Madonna with an Infant” for 1508 for $ 16.9 million, a record price for an artist’s work at auction.
