A quantum communication line was built between Moscow and St. Petersburg

Deputy Director General of TransTeleCom (a subsidiary of Russian Railways) Alexei Nozdrin announced the completion of the construction of a quantum communication line between Moscow and St. Petersburg, which will be launched in the current quarter.

The network already exists, the equipment has been installed, and, in fact, the commissioning remains. In the second quarter, the launch should take place in the form of a transferred quantum key.

The head of “TransTeleCom” added that the constructed network uses Russian-made equipment, the name of which he did not specify. The maximum security of the transmitted data is the main advantage of the quantum network, according to the operator, which relies on demand from financial organizations, law enforcement agencies and other government organizations. Among the scenarios for using quantum technologies, in addition to transferring data from banks and government agencies, the developers cited the construction of secure Internet of Things systems and the management of unmanned trains.

The construction of an 800-kilometer quantum network between Moscow and St. Petersburg was approved by the government last summer. This is part of a large-scale project to create a quantum network with a length of 10,000 km. Until 2024, 16.7 billion rubles will be spent for these purposes. By that time, the volume of services provided in the quantum network will reach about 55 billion rubles, according to Russian Railways.
