About a quarter of gas stations in Florida were out of gas Thursday morning, according to gas price tracking platform GasBuddy.
At 10:30 a.m. local time (11:30 a.m. Brasília time), 24.8% of gas stations across the state were out of fuel, GasBuddy said.
Service interruptions at gas stations are much greater in the hardest-hit areas.
Nearly two-thirds (63%) of gas stations in the Tampa and St. Petersburg area were out of gas at 10:30 a.m. local time, and 44% in Sarasota were “dry,” according to GasBuddy.
Just over a third of gas stations in the Fort Myers-Naples area (37%) and more than a quarter (28%) in the Orlando-Daytona Beach area were out of fuel.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said Thursday that authorities are working to ensure the fuel is delivered.
“I hope we can open our gas stations, big stores and everything very quickly,” said DeSantis.
The Port of Tampa appears not to have been impacted as severely by the strong storm, which many feared would damage critical energy infrastructure.
Tampa Mayor Jane Castor said the port “looks good” and that officials hope to be able to get fuel to the port and the rest of the state.
This is a crucial entry point for much of the fuel going to stations throughout Florida, not to mention diesel and jet fuel for airports.
Hurricane Milton leaves deaths and destruction
Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, as a dangerous Category 3 storm, generating strong winds and rain, as well as flooding and tornadoes.
It weakened to Category 1 as it crossed the state and moved offshore, according to the US National Hurricane Center.
Still, the storm left a trail of destruction, roofing houses, knocking down trees, poles and a crane.
Four people died in St. Lucie County after tornadoes ripped through the region, authorities said. Governor Ron DeSantis said there could be more victims.
Milton is the third hurricane to hit Florida this year, leaving more than 3 million people without power in the state. Wind gusts of 100 mph were recorded near Tampa.
