A rather quiet session to wait for the first quarterly publications

After a week of “pause” in terms of corporate or economic news, the next few days are shaping up to be busy for investors. In the United States , the earnings season is starting: BlackRock, Citigroup, Alcoa, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, UnitedHealth, Morgan Stanley, Walgreens and Schlumberger will publish their quarterly results.

Profits of the S & P500 components are expected to drop 20.9% year on year. A decline halfway between that of 31.7% in the second quarter and that of 12.9% forecast for the last quarter. The drop in earnings per share should be significant in sectors such as transport, energy, automotive and banking. Corporate margins, the lasting impact or otherwise of the health crisis and the prospects for a return to normalcy will be at the heart of the conference calls.

In the meantime, Monday’s session will be fairly quiet. Operators will mainly follow the latest developments concerning the development of an economic support plan for the United States and the evolution of the pandemic. Note that due to Columbus Day , the US bond market will be closed, but Wall Street will remain open. In France, a few third quarter sales publications are expected, such as those from Ekinops and  PSB Industries . A taste before the announcements, Thursday, of LVMH and Publicis in the Cac 40 .
