A real market crash: sales of NVIDIA video cards fell by 26%

The American analytical company Jon Peddie Research published a fresh report on the computer components market for the second quarter of 2022 – it turned out that there is a noticeable decline on literally all fronts. And, of course, the three largest companies – NVIDIA, AMD and Intel – suffered the most from the deterioration in sales. For example, according to analysts, the global GPU market has grown by 84 million units, while desktop CPU shipments are down 34% year-over-year. But the most interesting thing is happening in the video card market, as there is a real collapse here.

To start with, overall GPU shipments were down 14.9% year-over-year, which is a really huge drop in sales levels, especially considering that growth has been exceptionally positive quarter-on-quarter over the past three to four years. Deliveries of AMD models decreased by 7.6%, which is unpleasant, of course, but not as critical as NVIDIA’s – the sales of the “green team” in fell by 25.7% compared to the previous quarter of 2022. And, of course, there is a completely reasonable explanation for this – for quite a long time, the lion’s share of NVIDIA’s sales were video cards bought by miners at an impressive price.

Those who follow the video card market remember that for several years it was impossible to purchase a video card at the recommended price – all graphics accelerators were swept off the shelves in the blink of an eye, even if the model cost two to three times more. Accordingly, NVIDIA could afford to release expensive models in partnership with the largest market players, receiving an impressive increase in sales from scratch. Now mining has almost died, no one buys video cards at this price, plus the secondary market hit sales hard – now there is a whole ocean of video cards for every taste and color on the used market.

Surprisingly, the desktop processor segment also suffered by 7% compared to the previous quarter – probably the whole point is in anticipation of new generations of chips from Intel and AMD, which should release their new products in October-November of this year. But whether NVIDIA will be able to correct the situation in the third quarter is an intriguing question. The company should hold a presentation of new video cards on September 19, but whether they will have time to reach the shelves and raise the level of sales is unknown.
