The independent blockchain-randor ZACHXBT revealed a social engineering scheme, as a result of which more than $ 4 million was stolen by users of the American cryptocurrency book Coinbase. The scheme was ruled by a resident of New York Christian Nieves.

Zachxbt said that Neves contacted users of the exchange by phone, posing as an employee of the Coinbase support service. The alleged criminal used the pseudonyms of Daytwo and Pawsonhips. He persuaded users to switch to pre-compromised wallets using sid-frazs provided by phone. Given that these wallets were already under the control of scammers, after making funds to the account, the attackers immediately abducted users’ money.

According to the blockchain-ray, Nieva had accomplices who helped him with a fraudulent call center, wrote dialogue scripts and monitored revenues in real time. Zachxbt published calls and noted that Nieva not only coordinated calls, but also personally communicated with some victims. Fraudsters used sophisticated psychological techniques to convince users to follow their instructions.

In November 2024, $ 240,000 in cryptocurrencies was stolen in an elderly man in this way. The analyst found out that Nyevs converted part of the stolen assets into the anonymous cryptocurrency Monero (XMR). In addition, he made bets on cryptocurrencies on the Roobet gambling website. Zachxbt found that the Pawsonhips account on Roobet is related to addresses that can be involved in 30 cases of the theft of crypto assets.

Recently, Zachxbt accused the Garden Finance service of promoting money laundering through cryptocurrencies. He suspects that 80% of the service commissions came from money laundering Lazarus with a hacker group, which made the largest attack on the BYBIT cryptocurrency.
