The prosecutor’s office of the Republic of China of Taiwan accused one of the country’s citizens of deliberately violating the law on presidential elections.

From December 12 to 17 last year, a man surnamed Chen (name withheld) repeatedly used the Polymarket prediction service platform to place bets on the outcome of the presidential election and the position of the Democratic Progressive Party. In total, the Taiwanese placed bets on the cryptototalizator platform for $500, denominated in USDC stablecoins.

The court took into account the sincere repentance and admission of guilt and decided to limit the suspended sentence to one year with a fine of 30,000 Taiwan dollars (about $1,000).

Last December, Taiwanese authorities expressed extreme concern that a significant number of citizens were drawn into a betting game organized by the DeFi platform Polymarket for the outcome of the January presidential elections.

At the direction of the Taiwanese government, law enforcement agencies began to suppress such activities. Officials reminded that violating election laws can result in jail time and a fine of more than $3,000.
