A retired Italian was lynched in Honduras by 600 people

Five suspects have been arrested by Honduran authorities on charges of taking part in the lynching of an Italian man, along with hundreds of others, in retaliation for the murder of a homeless elderly man.

On Thursday, a crowd of 600 people attacked Giorgio Scanu with stones, sticks and machetes inside his house in the city of Santa Ana de Jusguare, in the province of Choluteca in southern Honduras.

According to the Ministry of Security, the crowd attacked Skanou, accusing him of beating a 78-year-old homeless man to death because he destroyed some ornamental plants he had in his garden.

“More than 600 angry residents entered the house and with sticks, stones and machetes killed the Italian who was accused of killing Juan de Dios Flores,” said Rebecca Martines, a ministry spokeswoman.

The crowd set fire to a part of the house and a car.

The police arrested him five people, aged between 19 and 55, for the murder of Skanos. The Italian was a retired engineer living in this city while his wife and two children live in the capital Tegucigalpa.

Martines said authorities were looking for others involved in the Scan lynching. Police were present at the time of the attack but were unable to prevent the killing due to the large crowd.
