A Russian warship violated Danish territorial waters

A Russian warship twice violated Danish territorial waters north of the Baltic island of Bornholm in the early hours of Friday, Reuters reports, citing the country’s Armed Forces.

The Russian warship entered Danish waters without permission at 00:30 GMT on Friday and again a few hours later, the Armed Forces said in a statement. The warship left after radio communication with the Danish navy.

Denmark described the action as an unacceptable challenge.

“A deeply irresponsible, vulgar and completely unacceptable Russian provocation in the middle of #fmdk,” Danish Foreign Minister Jepe Kofont wrote on Twitter, referring to the Republic of Denmark Festival on Bornholm Island.

The annual festival is attended by senior government officials, including Kofont and Prime Minister Mete Frederiksen.

“The methods of intimidation do not work against Denmark,” Kofont said. The Russian ambassador had been asked to give explanations, he added.
