A Saturday of “Relief” for parents of children with disabilities

When a child arrives, everyday life is completely turned upside down. It is filled with love but also with new difficulties to learn to manage. And it’s not always easy. For Alessandra and her husband Stefano it also meant knowing the disability with which their daughter Camilla was born. Learn to manage it and be close to it in the best way.

Thanks to’association “The ability”Alessandra and Stefano, who welcome children like Camilla, who are severely disabled in Milan, have discovered they are not alone.

And they decided to entrust their child to the care of the non-profit organization for one Saturday a month: “the Saturday of relief”, which the non-profit organization offers by giving parents the opportunity to have a day of rest from the constant tasks of care and assistance.

“For me and my husband Stefano, the relief is the ability to manage time in a different way,” Alessandra tells us. “It is a moment of pause from the thousand things of which our daily life is made, knowing that our daughter Camilla is in good hands”.

Not an easy decision to make. “I must be honest: the first day I left Camilla al Sollievo I lived very badly, with a mixture of feelings in which the sense of guilt emerged. Stefano kept repeating to me that it is necessary to disconnect once in a while from the races that we do every day, to find some serenity and have more time for us as a couple, to do some trivial things that we are no longer used to doing. Instead, I was only thinking of Camilla, who like all children with disabilities struggles to deal with the news… and this day was definitely different from usual! Then when we went to get her in the evening, she was more serene than us, and then this was a double relief ».

During these Saturdays the children have the opportunity to live meaningful educational experiences, momentarily detached from the family, which is fundamental for the growth and autonomy of each child. Furthermore, as the association points out, at the end of the day the educators can give parents suggestions on activities that can also be done at home in the management of their child’s free time.

«That relaxed expression of Camilla and her smiles swept away the worries that had crossed over during the day: now I knew that my little girl was in a protected, stimulating and suitable environment for her disabilities. I felt then for the first time that I could grant myself the subsequent Sollievi with a different breath ».

For this Christmas, the association The skill, has created a solidarity gift that is a gesture of care for those who give it, for those who receive it and for the children with disabilities they care for: it is called the Right Box and it is a gift box, in 7 variants, containing different food, hobby or wellness products. The wellness variant symbolically contains a gesture of care for all the mothers of L’ability who always have little time and energy to think for themselves.

The Right Box is ordered from the site www.labilita.org or by calling 02-66805457 (donation starting from 25 euros).

The funds raised will support the care work that, every day, for 21 years and also in this period of serious health and social emergency, The ability ensures children with disabilities who attend its specialized services, such as the Saturday of Relief.
