Energy-saving projects in buildings, especially for the islands, acceleration of electricity interconnections, “greening” of energy production on the islands that will remain unconnected and extension of the “Greco islands” initiative for sustainable actions on the islands, are included in the investments that will be made with funding from the Carboniferous Islands.
This was stated by the Secretary General of Energy and Mineral Raw Materials, RIS Alexandra Sdoukou speaking yesterday at an event on “Costs of Green Transition and Carbonation of Islands” organized by the Hellenic Energy Economy Company (Hellenic Energy and Environment) and the Environment (Hellenic Environment) and Environment.
The Fund, which will receive resources from the auction of unallocated carbon rights, estimates that – depending on the price of the rights – it can raise amounts of 1-2 billion euros, which can be doubled by leveraging additional resources.
As Ms. Sdoukou pointed out, the implementation of sustainability programs on the islands can also serve as a pole of attraction for tourists, while she called on private companies in the context of corporate social responsibility to contribute to the financing of these investments.
Harout Doukas, Associate Professor of NTUA and Chairman of the Energy & Tax Reform Council of ELLET, underlined the need to jointly design the energy system of the islands with the local government. “On an unconnected island it makes no sense to switch to electric vehicles when electricity is generated from oil. The question we have to answer is how many renewables will be installed on the islands and with what compensation,” he added. He also referred to the first Greek project in operation of production and self-management of energy from RES on the island of Tilos, emphasizing that as a country, both in scientific and business level, we have and are pioneers in technological solutions.
At the same event, Costas Andriosopoulos, Professor at Audencia Business School, stressed that before the energy crisis, the cost of megawatt hours on the islands (which is distributed to all consumers through Utilities) had already reached 400-500 euros, which means that it is imperative and will have a significant economic impact to reduce costs by promoting renewables.
