“A serenade of love for Rio”, says Manoel Carlos’ daughter about the author’s legacy

About to embark on her first project with the production company Boa Palavra, actress and creative director Júlia Almeida, 41, daughter of Manuel Carlos 91, reflects, exclusively to CNN the balance left by the father in the face of the current wave of Brazilian authors.

“I believe that one of the most precious things was this entire universe that he built in the soap operas. Manoel Carlos is to Rio de Janeiro what Woody Allen is to New York “, he jokes.

This Tuesday (17), at 7 pm, the businesswoman launches, on YouTube, the documentary “The Leblon of Manoel Carlos” – a project taken from paper to preserve the author’s creative legacy, both for his admirers and for future generations.

“Great dialogues, a serenade of love for Rio, [ele] It talked about problems in our daily lives. This is not easy to materialize in a soap opera or series. It is more or less like asking a makeup artist for light makeup. The professional will spend more time doing ‘almost no makeup’ than doing heavy makeup. And this requires technique”, adds Júlia.

Many Helenas and the air of Leblon: the creations of Manoel Carlos

Renowned in Brazilian television drama, Maneco stood out for his unique perspective and keen observation of everyday details, which he included in successful works such as “Laços de Família” (2000), “Mulheres Apaixonadas” (2003) and “Viver a Vida” (2010).

In this trajectory, Leblon – a typical Rio neighborhood in the south zone – emerged as a central backdrop for the proposed plots. According to the actress, the region was like an “important character” in the soap operas.

“He put the spotlight on the neighborhood, generating curiosity. From then on, in my opinion, Leblon is a desirable neighborhood. Whether it’s to visit, live in, open a business or go to the beach. But, in Manoel’s case, he created a universe that goes with this. Everything comes with a soundtrack, characters and catchphrases,” he adds.

With the current trend of generation Z to rescue aesthetics, visuals and everything that marked entertainment during the 2000s, it is common that in TikTok – a social network dominated by this audience – excerpts of works signed by Manoel quickly went viral.

There, influencers and content creators even make references to the experiences of the various Helenas, the author’s protagonists.

According to Júlia, despite so many works, some are listed by her father with an extra plus. “He has great affection for all of his works, but especially: ‘A Sucessora’ (shown between 1978 and 1978 – as an adaptation of the book of the same name by Carolina Nabuco) and ‘O Magnata’. The second one, in fact, he wrote for outside of Brazil […] The public still has a lot to discover about Manoel Carlos”, he concludes.
