The challenge ‘Response to the pandemic’, organized by XPRIZE together with Cognizant, has selected as the first winner the predictive model based on AI and data from the Spanish team VALENCIA IA4COVID19 coordinated by the telecommunications engineer Nuria Oliver.
‘Response to the pandemic’ is a four-month, global contest that encourages participants to use data and artificial intelligence to develop models capable of accurately predicting Covid-19 transmission rates and prescribe intervention and mitigation measures that, after being tested in ‘hypothetical’ scenarios, show to reduce the ratio as well as the negative impacts on the economy.
Endowed with 500,000 dollars, the contest organizers, XPRIZE and Cognizant, have announced the winners: the Spanish team VALENCIA IA4COVID19, as the first classified for the quality of their presentations, the Slovenian team JSI vs COVID.
VALENCIA IA4COVID19 is coordinated by Dr. Nuria Oliver, curator of the Presidency of the Generalitat Valenciana, and J. Alberto Conejero, director of the Department of Applied Mathematics of the Polytechnic University of Valencia.
The Spanish team has been collaborating with the Valencian Government since March of last year to use data science in the fight against Covid-19. Their model successfully predicted the evolution of the pandemic thanks to the use of AI and data science.
For its part, JSI vs COVID worked to develop accurate predictors of COVID-19 infections using a combination of a SEIR epidemiological model and machine learning.
The winning models will be made available to policy makers, business leaders and health authorities around the world as they evaluate strategies to safely reopen and revive the economy. In addition to the two winners, eight more teams have received honorable mentions and will each earn $ 3,000 in AWS credits for computing and cloud services. Among them is the Madrid team CoronaSurveys.
