At the airport in Mallorca’s capital Palma, planes were stuck on flooded runways as heavy rain swept through the popular tourist destination today. The storm halted all operations at Son Sant Joan airport, Spain’s third-largest, after it was “impossible to operate safely,” civil aviation agency Aena said. The airport activated its emergency plan and flights to Mallorca were temporarily diverted to other airports, Transport Minister Oscar Puente said. Later, the minister announced via platform X that the airport is resuming operations after the rain has stopped. The national meteorological service AEMET said its station at the airport recorded rain of almost 5 centimeters per hour, with a peak of 9 centimeters in less than an hour.
