A strong earthquake shook Mexico

Earthquake A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook the state of Guerrero in western Mexico on Friday, the Mexican Seismological Service said.

The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, however; no tsunami alert was issued. The epicenter was reported at 59 km east of San Marcos, Guerrero, at the epicenter.

At the seaside resort of Acapulco, near the epicenter, the quake was felt strongly, forcing many holidaymakers to leave their hotels in a hurry.

“We panicked (…) I could not go out, one of my daughters was taking a bath,” Virginia Hernandez, a tourist in Acapulco, told local media.

The quake triggered nervous reactions in several in the capital, where the vibration was not particularly noticeable, but the warning sirens sounded.

“After flying over a helicopter (…) and contacting the relevant services, we found that no damage was recorded in the city of Mexico,” Mayor Claudia Seinbaum assured via Twitter.

Dozens of residents of the central district of Doctors rushed to the streets, a journalist of the French Agency reported.

In Mexico, with its long coastline in the Pacific Ocean, strong earthquakes are often recorded.

In September 2017, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake killed 370 people and injured more than 7,000, mostly in the capital.

In 1985, an earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale killed thousands of people in Mexico.
