In the Kazakhstan National Supercomputer Center, the alemcloud took place on the launching ceremony of the supercomputer based on the NVIDIA H200 graphic processors. The event was attended by the president of the country Kasim-Zhomart Tokaev, writes Inbusiness.kz.
The installation and launch of the system took place in the new data center of the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and the aerospace industry. The project was attended by international partners.
The new cluster of high -performance GPU has a power of up to 2 exaflops according to the calculation method in the FP format. This makes the supercomputer the most powerful computing solution in the Central Asian region.
Tokaev noted that the step will become an important stage in the path to digitalizing key industries. Startups, universities, scientific centers, state and private companies will receive access to a supercomputer.
A supercomputer is a high -performance computing system designed to perform extremely complex and resource -intensive tasks, which are beyond the power of ordinary devices. They are most often used for scientific calculations, modeling and analysis of large amounts of data. Including for:
- climate and weather modeling;
- aerospace and nuclear calculations;
- bioinformatics and drug development;
- training and simulations of AI models;
- quantum simulations.
Where and how supercomputers are used
Supercomputers around the world are used in the military field. In 2024, in the US Liverrand National Laboratory launched EL Capitan with RMAX performance about 1.742 exaflops and the theoretical peak of ~ 2.79 exaflops.
It is funded by the nuclear security department and serves to ensure the reliability of the country’s nuclear arsenal in the absence of nuclear tests. The system is also used for scientific research in the interests of national security.
Another example is Frontier, which was installed in the National Laboratory OK Ridge. In June 2022, he became the first in the world confirmed by the exaflopse computer, showing about 1.102 exaflops RMAX on the Linpack test. By 2024, the efficiency of scaling increased to ~ 1.353 RMAX exaflops with peak possibilities of about 2.05 exaflops.
In this case, the use of a purely civilian supercomputer is a platform of the US Department of Energy for open research in the field of climatology, materials science, astrophysics, nuclear physics and other disciplines.
In the Argon National Laboratory (Illinois) is Aurora with ~ 1.012 exaflops RMAX at the theoretical maximum of ≈1.98 exaflops. It is focused on scientific research and is provided for the use of the general public. Its capabilities are intended for solutions in peaceful areas: modeling the structure of the brain, research in the field of thermonuclear synthesis, the creation of new materials for batteries and solar elements, the study of subatomic particles, the search for drugs for cancer, cosmological modeling, and so on.
China has its own supercomputer-Tianhe-3. It was created by the National University of Defense Technology. According to unofficial data, Tianhe-3 was launched in 2023 and has a peak speed of about 2–2.1 exaflops with evaluative performance ~ 1.3–1.57 RMAX exaflops. These indicators make it one of the most powerful computers on the planet, although China does not publish results in international ratings.
Official areas of application Tianhe-3: tasks of high-performance computing, big data and AI training. Considering that a military university is a supercomputer developer, he probably has defense value.
In May, China sent 12 satellites into space as part of a project to launch a network of orbital supercomputers.
