A. Tsipras against defense agreement: US sends F16 to Turkey to fly over Greek islands

By Niki Zorba

SYRIZA is voting against the defense agreement that is ratified today in the Greek Parliament, but when “the political change comes, it will modify it” and bring another one, Alexis Tsipras announced in his speech, calling on the Prime Minister to withdraw her vote today and restore it. after his visit to Washington if he gets a commitment from the American president that he will not give F16 to Turkey.

In this context, the president of SYRIZA tried to deconstruct the Greek-American agreement in its entirety, claiming in essence that it is detrimental to the country’s interests.

At the forefront of Turkey, the port of Alexandroupolis and Energy, the SYRIZA president wondered “Is there a Prime Minister of a serious NATO country who would make such an agreement? Will becoming an equal ally, satellite will have some guarantees against Turkey? “Even before the ink of the Agreement you signed dries, the US, with its nonpaper, withdraws in writing its support for the Eastmed pipeline.”

Styling his speech, A. Tsipras said, among other things, about:

Government- Mitsotaki

In this world and in this critical moment, Mr. Mitsotakis, you are choosing the most dangerous shift, the most dangerous change in the foreign policy of the country, after the restoration of the Republic.
You are abandoning the country’s fixed positions in relation to the role of pillar of stability and diplomacy that it must play in its wider region, the moderate and careful role that Greece has traditionally played both within NATO and in relation to American plans.
You choose again and again to tell us that Greece’s main priority is to be a front-line military force on NATO’s east wing.
You are telling us that Greece’s interest allegedly dictates that it take the lead in US and NATO military plans – either by conceding Greek military installations indefinitely, or by upgrading the role of Alexandroupolis, or by sending weapons to Ukraine.
And that Greece must be a loyal and predictable ally that provides its defense capabilities in advance for the benefit of NATO or US collective defense interests, in order to have – in the indefinite future – the support of its Allies in its own defense interests. against Turkey.

Defense Agreement

Revision of the Agreement, in which you make two colossal concessions to the USA: You are eliminating an extremely important negotiating paper of Greece, which is the annual renewal of the defense agreement, and you become the first Prime Minister of the post-colonial government to consent to the indefinite facilities from the USA.
And secondly you concede the port of Alex / polis.

Unbelievable joke, that you are attempting with your reference to an alleged 5-year renewal of the agreement. But a report that reveals your guilt. The US Secretary of State does not have your anxiety and nailed you in front of the Greek Foreign Minister, saying literally that “this renewal will allow the agreement to remain in force indefinitely”.

As for the Greek military installations in Alexandroupolis, you are conceding them in order to be integrated in the front line of the American military plans in the context of the most dangerous confrontation with Russia of the last decades.
And in this context, of course, I recall the statements made by Russian officials about Alexpolis before the war in Ukraine.
And at the same time that Alexpoli is being targeted militarily, you go out and say that “we do not want the port to be commercial. That is, to lose the most important development perspective of the region.

In return for what in relation to the direct defense interests of Greece, did you make these concessions?
The signing and ratification of the Agreement was accompanied by a rapid upgrade of US-Turkish relations and a consequent deterioration of the Greek-Turkish power relationship to the detriment of our country.

Until a few days before the agreement was signed, we all heard about a 5-year or even 10-year agreement and suddenly you announce an indefinite agreement.
You have informed us that a reference to the Agreement is added to this famous term which states that “it will remain in force until terminated”.
And all this in the midst of the then rapidly deteriorating NATO-Russian relations that they had and as a result we do not know every day what will dawn on us.

Is there a Prime Minister of a serious NATO country who would make such an agreement? By becoming an equal ally, satellite will we have some guarantees against Turkey? Before the ink of the Agreement you signed dries, the US with its nonpaper, withdraws its written support for the Eastmed pipeline.

SYRIZA-PS will vote against the Agreement that you are bringing to a vote today. And when it becomes Government, it will use Par. 1 of Article 7 to amend it.

Turkey

What is the so-called isolated Turkey gaining and losing from the latest developments?
In the Aegean, we see a tsunami of overflights and violations of Greek islands.
Is Turkey imposing sanctions on Russia over Ukraine? Is not Turkey a member of NATO? Is it a special case?

Turkey is asking the US to buy 40 F16s and modernize another 80.
That is, it demands that the correlation of power in the air, in the Aegean, change drastically.

Not only is this request not rejected by the US, but President Biden accepts it and sends it to Congress, just hours before you vote on the indefinite concession of Alexandroupolis and other facilities and before you fly to Washington.
That is, Mr. Mitsotakis, we are sending weapons at the urging of the United States, to Ukraine and Saudi Arabia, and the United States is sending new F16 planes to Turkey, to fly over us.
