Alexis Tsipras launched a harsh attack on the Prime Minister in his statements coming to the Eurosocialist Summit (PES).
Asked by a journalist about the Tsiodra-Lytra study, the president of SYRIZA answered that:
“In any other European country, in any other country of the European Union, if the Prime Minister were arrested for lying in Parliament about such a critical issue, which concerns the lives of tens, hundreds, thousands, I would say our fellow citizens, or he would have come out publicly to apologize. “Either he would have resigned. In Greece, however, neither happened. And this confirms the great deficit of democracy that our country has today.”
Revise the Stability Pact
In a statement to the European Socialist Party (PES), Mr Tsipras called for a revision of the Stability Pact, among other things, referring to the multiple crises the EU is going through.
“Europe is going through a multiple crisis. The health crisis, the climate crisis, the energy crisis. So we can not go on with yesterday’s recipes. The Maastricht criteria, the Stability Pact must be revised, because life itself has shown “We have to unite forces, especially the progressive forces, to unite our voices so as not to let the conservative forces take us back to yesterday’s recipes. To revise the Stability Pact into a Pact for Sustainable Development and Social Convergence.”
He added: “To expand the criteria. It is not enough today to talk about debt and deficit, which in relation to the percentage of 60% and 3% do not correspond to reality, but we must also talk about social criteria. “Inequalities, poverty, unemployment. Excluding development investment from the deficit calculation.”
He called for “a balancing act, because the surpluses of the North are what reflect the deficits of the South. So we can not only talk about reduced deficits in the South, but also of low surpluses in the North. “A permanent tool is the Fund for Recovery and Resilience for European governments. These are initiatives that we must take, to join forces, so as not to return to the vicious circle of austerity, to the vicious circle of social disintegration we have seen in previous years.”
