A US resident could be given life imprisonment for stealing cryptocurrencies

To 24-year-old resident of the United States of America Remy St Felix threatens life imprisonment for burglarizing homes to steal cryptocurrency.

In a statement, the US Department of Justice said St. Felix was the leader of a team that broke into victims’ homes and demanded access to their cryptocurrency accounts between September 2022 and July 2023.

“St. Felix and his associates targeted victims across the United States with violent home invasions, kidnappings and robberies to steal cryptocurrency,” said Justice Department Criminal Division Chief Nicole M. Argentieri.

It is known that in April 2023, a group of robbers broke into the victim’s home, where they tied her up and held her at gunpoint, and also threatened her husband with violence. Then the criminals managed to steal more than $150,000 in cryptocurrency.

According to the court, the attackers gained unauthorized access to the victims’ emails and conducted physical surveillance before committing a home invasion robbery.

“They laundered the stolen funds using cryptocurrencies with increased anonymity, such as Monero, as well as decentralized exchanges that did not require KYC,” the Ministry of Justice said in a statement.

St. Felix and thirteen other accomplices were arrested in July 2023 as they were about to commit another robbery in New York. The jury found Saint-Felix guilty on nine counts. He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 11, 2024 and faces a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years in prison and a maximum sentence of life in prison.
