Facebook’s Instagram team has announced the international release of the Instagram Lite app.
As noted by the developers, at the moment the simple and lightweight Instagram Lite application is distributed in more than 170 countries. The exact list of regions is not named, but in Russia the application is available on Google Play.
The app debuted in Mexico in 2018. The app was aimed at developing regions, users of weak smartphones and an intermittent or weak internet connection. It was closed in May 2020, but the Instagram team promised to rewrite Instagram Lite from scratch. The reinvented Instagram Lite app was released again in September for India.
Instagram Lite is only 2MB in size, while the “full” version of Instagram weighs in at around 30MB. For the sake of this ease, the developers sacrificed some of the features, leaving the core ones, focusing on images, messages and videos.
In Instagram Lite, the main feed, “Stories”, private messages are available, but there are no, for example, live broadcasts, Instagram Shopping showcases. Features that will not run on low-powered devices, such as live filters or augmented reality effects, are also not supported.
