A young man was killed by a bullet yesterday Thursday evening (local time) in New York, very close to Times Square – tourist magnet of the megalopolis where in theory the carrying of weapons is prohibited -, the police announced.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) was notified at 17:30 (00:30 Greek time) and its members provided first aid to a 22-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest at the intersection of 8th Avenue and 44th Street in Manhattan, in front of in restaurant.
After being taken to a hospital, he “succumbed to his injuries,” a police spokesman said by email. “No arrests have been made” so far and “the investigation is ongoing.”
According to the tabloid New York Daily News, which cited an eyewitness, the young man was shot by two people who then fled.
In the context of the fight against crime and the spread of firearms in New Yorkcenter-right Mayor Eric Adams, a former police officer, ordered dozens of posters reading “Times Square: Gun Free Zone” to be placed around the square.
After a large increase in gun homicides in 2020 and 2021 in New York, the number fell in 2022 to 433 in the city of 8.5 million people and one million visitors.
