Not a single building was left intact in the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, the scene of some of the fiercest battles in Ukraine’s conflict. The information is contained in a report by the Russian media company “Izvestia”, which also witnessed several abandoned domestic animals.
The head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said on May 20 that his forces had captured all territory in Bakhmut as promised and would start to leave the conflict zone later this week.
In a brief report published this Tuesday (23), Russia’s Izvestia accompanied some Wagner Group fighters in the ruins of Bakhmut. The mercenaries spoke of some robberies they had participated in in the city, while others spoke of dogs left behind and children’s toys they found among the ruins of apartment buildings.
Bakhmut once had a population of 71,000 and was famous for the nearby salt deposit, as well as its local champagne made from Crimean grapes.
Moscow claims to have captured Bakhmut over the weekend, after what is said to be Europe’s bloodiest battles since World War Two.
Ukraine, however, said on Monday that its troops were still advancing on the flanks of the devastated eastern city of Bakhmut, although the “intensity” of their movement had subsided and Russia was bringing in more forces. The report cannot verify the veracity of the battlefield reports.
