ABB announces Formula E climate initiatives at COP26

At the 26th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow, ABB announces the ABB Formula E Climate Initiatives, which will underscore the commitment of the global technology leader to address related issues. with climate change.

ABB is a title partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship – the world’s first international series of electric racing cars. Together with Formula E, the company is constantly looking for new ways to promote sustainability issues through the Championship, maximizing the positive impact on the cities and countries where the races take place.

This rationale has contributed to the development of the Climate Initiatives, which focus on three main pillars:

– Innovative technologies
– Social progress, diversity and inclusion
– Differences in the championship

The Initiatives were discussed at a COP26 panel on 10/11/2021, attended by ABB Chief Communication and Sustainability Officer Theodor Swedjemark, Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle and ROKiT Venturi Racing driver Lucas di Grassi.

Under these pillars, activities will be undertaken in conjunction with ABB Formula E racing in cities around the world. ABB will also use its existing partnership with the FIA Girls on Track to strengthen women’s participation by promoting gender equality in an attractive and positive way. It will also support energy sustainability through education, awareness raising, training and volunteering, by organizing events in schools and communities. This commitment will be expressed through targeted publicity programs at venues, globally and locally.

Lucas Di Grassi participates in the panel in his new role as ABB Ambassador to ABB Formula E. His commitment to sustainability and e-mobility makes him an ideal partner for ABB with whom they coordinate their efforts in projects that promote sustainability and tackling climate change.

Theodor Swedjemark, representing ABB, said: “Sustainability is the basis of all our energy and inspires us to move forward. Together with Formula E, we participate in COP26, with the firm belief that our products and services have a positive impact. in reducing CO emissions2. But in order to have greater success we need the cooperation of all stakeholders. “Our joint climate initiatives are a good example of this partnership, utilizing a high-profile body such as Formula E to demonstrate that we can continue to push the boundaries of technology by supporting evolution.”

In this spirit, ABB also partnered with TIME magazine at COP26, presenting the “Sustainability Series”, a series of events on climate issues.

In addition, ABB leverages its global presence to launch the “ABB Road To COP” and # ABB4ClimateAction information campaigns through a series of events in major markets such as the USA, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Switzerland and India.

As part of “ABB Road To COP”, ABB will present the convenience of a major road trip with a modern electric vehicle, driving a Porsche Taycan from the south coast of England to Glasgow, which hosts COP26. The approximately 750 km route will take place in one day, with charging stops at points where partners with ABB charging equipment are located. A short film will be produced about the trip, highlighting the benefits of electric mobility.

As part of the “Sustainability Strategy for 2030”, ABB plans to achieve a carbon-neutral footprint by continuing to switch to renewable energy and improving its energy efficiency. The EV 100 plan commits ABB to electrifying its fleet of more than 10,000 vehicles by 2030, and also aims to reduce annual CO emissions2 of its customers by 100 megatons, a size equivalent to the annual emissions of 30 million cars with internal combustion engines.

ABB is committed to working with clients, governments, business partners, institutions and NGOs to help meet the Paris climate target. In fact, the reduction targets of the company itself have now been approved by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative, confirming that they are compatible with the 1.5 ° C scenario of the Paris Agreement.
