Abba returns to the top of the British chart with 1st album in 40 years

The Swedish group Abba made a triumphant return to the British charts, this Friday (12), going straight to number 1 with their first album in 40 years, “Voyage”.

The album was the fastest selling album this year, according to the British Official Charts Company: 204,000 units in the first week.

Only on three other occasions has the 200,000 mark been surpassed in the last decade: Adele with “25”, Ed Sheeran with “Divide” and One Direction with “Midnight Memories”.

“We are very happy that our fans seem to have enjoyed our new record as much as we enjoyed making it!” Abba said in a statement. “We are absolutely delighted to have a record topping the charts again!”

“Voyage,” which received mixed reviews from critics, is the band’s first since 1981’s “The Visitors” and their 10th UK #1 album.

“This also marks a total of 58 weeks for Abba at number 1 on the Official UK Album Chart,” reported the Official Charts Company, adding that only the Beatles and Elvis Presley spent more weeks at the top in all of history.

The company also said that the “Voyage” total consisted of 90% physical copies, with 29,900 on vinyl, making it “the fastest selling vinyl release in all of history”.

In an interview with Reuters last week, Bjorn Ulvaeus said that “Voyage” may be the band’s latest unreleased, but fellow Anni-Frid Lyngstad told BBC Radio 2 on Thursday that she learned to “never say never”.
