On the territory of Abkhazia, representatives of energy companies, together with law enforcement agencies, are conducting raids, identifying and confiscating mining equipment.
At a press conference on September 21, President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania said that 6,000 units of mining devices were seized as part of a special operation of law enforcement agencies and energy representatives. He added that all large data centers in the territory of Abkhazia are closed, only about 30,000 devices were kept by private individuals.
Despite the struggle with miners, the situation remains serious. According to a Sukhumi law enforcement official, their efforts to identify violators of the mining law and confiscation of equipment on the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia were unsuccessful.
Power engineer Pavel Maksimov sees the reason for non-compliance with the law in the fact that the miners in Abkhazia are “not disciplined” and are not going to turn off the equipment. Therefore, law enforcement agencies and representatives of Energonadzor regularly face conflicts on their part. He believes that the issue is not so much about mining as about illegal connection to electricity sources.
A meeting on September 17 with the Head of the Executive Power of Abkhazia Alexander Ankvab with the leadership of cities, districts and the directorate of RUE “Chernomenergo” was devoted to the problems of the energy industry in Abkhazia. During the meeting, Akhra Gagulia, director of the branch of Chernomenergo RUE, said that the seizure of devices for mining cryptocurrencies does not completely solve the problem. It is also important to confiscate illegally installed transformers. He added that joint raids with law enforcement agencies will continue. The issue requires continuous monitoring, so work on identifying violators will be legal constantly. At the end of the meeting, the participants came to the conclusion that the problem with cryptocurrency mining on the territory of Abkhazia has not yet been resolved.
In 2021, Abkhazia was negotiating with Russia to increase the volume of electricity supplies. Economy Minister Christina Ozgan said that Abkhazia intends to purchase additional volumes of electricity from Russia. She added that Abkhazia
will create all conditions for legal mining.
