The lack of electricity in Abkhazia is aggravated by cryptocurrency miners, according to the government of the republic. The Gudauta branch of Chernomorenergo offers new ways to combat illegal farms.
On September 17, a meeting of the government of the republic was held with the participation of the Prime Minister of Abkhazia Alexander Ankvab. The officials concluded that the fight against miners is “an endless process.” However, there are effective ways to combat illegal mining.
Akhra Gagulia, head of the Gudauta branch of Chernomorenerg, stressed that confiscation of mining equipment helps only partially – often new illegal farms appear in the same place. The seizure of illegally installed transformers can solve the issue more radically:
“I made a list of illegally installed transformers and handed it over to the government. The Prime Minister supported the initiative, and perhaps this is the way to quickly and fundamentally change the situation with consumption. Now we will work out how to remove them and where to install them. ”
At the same time, the management of Chernomorenergo is also not going to give up traditional raids with law enforcement agencies.
Illegal mining of cryptocurrencies is a rather important problem for Abkhazia amid a shortage of electricity. In July, President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania proposed firing or depriving officials of bonuses for large-scale illegal mining in the reporting territories.
