The Parliament of Abkhazia adopted in the first reading a bill on a complete ban on cryptocurrency mining and made changes to the Criminal Code of the republic, which provides for liability for the mining of digital assets.

According to the bill, importing mining equipment across the border of Abkhazia, connecting to power grids and consuming electricity in excess of 30 kWh for the purpose of mining virtual assets will be punishable by a prison term of one to three years and confiscation of devices.

The new bill establishes a ban not only on the mining of cryptocurrency, but also on the circulation and advertising of equipment with which one can mine cryptocurrency.

The ban on mining in Abkhazia has been in effect since 2018, and since 2020 a temporary ban on the import of devices for mining digital assets has been introduced. However, for violation of these prohibitions, only administrative punishment was in force, although the equipment was confiscated.

Earlier, Acting Prime Minister of Abkhazia Valery Bganba called for strengthening the fight against cryptocurrency mining, as the energy infrastructure of this partially recognized country was under threat of collapse.
