Abortion in the US: Awaiting Supreme Court Ruling – What’s the Image in the States

The Supreme Court of USA is being prepared by the end of June annul the historic 1973 decision recognizing the right to abortion. As there are no relevant federal laws, the decision is a milestone of the Supreme Court, which has gone down in history as “Row vs. Wade”, is the one that guarantees a woman’s right to an abortion in the US.

A 1992 court decision allows access to abortion while the fetus is not yet viable, that is, around the 22nd to the 24th week of pregnancy.

The statesas reported by ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ, are not allowed to pass laws that would “unnecessarily burden” a woman wishing to have an abortion.

This legal framework is likely to be overturned soon.

According to one draft Supreme Court ruling leaked to the press in early Maythe conservative majority of the 9-member House is expected to overturn the historic 1973 decision.

“We expect Rowe v. Wade to be reversed,” wrote Judge Samuel Alito, who drafted the ruling. “It’s time to respect the constitution, Mr.to return the issue of abortion to the representatives elected by the people “ he judged.

Pending the reversal of the law, lawmakers in 13 states under Republican rule have already drafted state laws that will take effect immediately if the Supreme Court overturns the Row v. Wade ruling.

Some states require parental consent

Conservative states have long tested the limits of “unnecessary burden” to impose laws restricting abortion forcing many clinics to close.

The states of West Virginia and Mississippi, for example, each have one abortion clinic, while California has more than 150.

Some states require minors to have parental consent before having an abortion or hearing the fetal heartbeat.

Since September 1, Texas, after a long legal battle, has banned abortions after six weeks, before some women realize they are pregnant.

Money is another factor. Almost 12 states ban compensation for a woman undergoing abortion by insurance funds. But 15 other states are compensating low-income women who go through this process with public funds.

Poverty and minorities

In 2020, more than 930,000 abortions were performed in the United Statesaccording to the latest statistics from the Guttmacher Institute, which has seen an increase recently after 30 years of steady decline.

This equates to 14.4 abortions for every 1,000 women of childbearing age, about the same rate as in most developed countries.

Almost 50% of women undergoing abortion live below the poverty line with black and Hispanic women outnumbering by 29% and 24% respectively.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 92.2% of abortions in the United States occur during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Public opinion is divided

More than 60% of Americans believe that abortion should remain legal in any case or in most casesa percentage that has remained relatively stable in recent years, according to a Pew Research Center survey.

But there are huge differences based on political beliefs80% of Democrats believe abortion should remain legal in all or most cases, while only 35% of Republicans believe the same.

And the gap is widening. These percentages were 72% and 39% respectively in 2016.

Religious beliefs also play an important role. 77% of white evangelists believe that abortion should be illegal in most cases.

During his 2016 election campaign, Republican Donald Trump managed to attract many voters from the religious Right by promising to appoint judges in the Supreme Court who have the same views as those who would be ready to overturn the historic decision.

During his four-year stay in the White House Trump has appointed three judges to the Supreme Court, giving the Conservatives a strong 6-3 majority.
