Survey carried out by CNN based on data from Google Trends reveals that the states in the North region lead the search interest on the platform for the term “abortion” in the last five years.
Of the five states that lead the interest in seeking abortion, four are from the North: Amazonas, Acre, Amapá and Roraima. On the other hand, the five states in which there is less interest in searching for the topic are Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná and São Paulo.

Also according to data from Google Trends, interest in the term “abortion” over the last 12 months registered a peak between the 9th and 15th of June this year, which coincides with the processing of bill 1904/2024 , authored by deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ), which plans to tighten legislation on abortion.
The text aims to equate abortion with the crime of simple homicide when the procedure is carried out after 22 weeks of pregnancy, even in cases of rape.
On June 12, the Chamber approved a request for the project to be processed urgently. After the vote, protests were held in several Brazilian cities.
Until last Friday (22), the questions related to the bill that had the highest increase in seven days, according to Google, were:
- PL 1904, what does it say?
- Abortion PL, what changes?
- How to vote against PL 1904?
- PL 1904, who created it?
- What is PL 1904?
Last week, Brazil was the country that most researched legislation related to abortion, followed by the United States and New Zealand.
Number of abortions in Brazil
Last year, 2,687 legal abortions were performed in Brazil, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The majority of procedures (635) were carried out in São Paulo, which is equivalent to 23.6% of the total.
Next are: Rio de Janeiro (317), Bahia (232), Minas Gerais and Pernambuco (both with 179).
The ministry warns that the 2023 data is preliminary and therefore “is subject to receipt of additional records and/or qualification after investigation”.
